The best betta aquarium kit?

Now this is a great starter tank kit for a betta fish!

Now this is a great starter tank kit for a betta fish! The large, 5 gallon capacity is leaps and bounds more spacious than those oh-so-popular betta “bubbles” and vases you see everywhere. Your betta needs room to stretch his fins, explore and get exercise. This 5 gallon, rounded aquarium provides that and then some!

The overwhelming majority of betta owners that make this the home for their fish have nothing but positive comments to say about the Aquarius 5 gallon fish tank. The rounded corners lend a unique look and easy clean up to the tank, and the LED lighting is much more than you would expect from a bundled kit. The filter really leaves nothing more to want and is gentle enough for bettas.

What we like!

The API Superclean filter keeps your betta tank cleaner, longer and does so while remaining whisper quiet.

Starting with the aquarium itself, this tank is made out of extra thick acrylic. The rounded corners of this Aquarius tank means that there are no glued together corners. This adds to the Leak Proof claim in the description. The extra thick acrylic housing is really quite durable and doesn’t pose the same risks that glass aquariums are prone to.

The water filtration system is amazing for this bundled together kit. The API Superclean filter keeps your betta tank cleaner, longer and does so while remaining whisper quiet. The API Superclean filter is a partially submerged filter with an open top design. A common concern with betta fish owners is the amount of current the filtration system puts out in the aquarium. This filter system does move water, but not to the point of endangering a healthy betta. That being said, you wouldn’t want to use this filter in an aquarium that is housing a sick or injured betta. Sick and/or injured bettas shouldn’t have a filtration system that produces any current at all. In general, you really should provide a place that your betta can hide in to get away from any current.

Built into the hood of the 5 gallon Aquarius aquarium, is a 3 setting, really long lasting, LED lighting system. Press the LED control button to cycle through pure white light, neon blue and a combination of the two. The combo setting is absolutely brilliant!

The lid design leaves nothing to be desired. One of the most frustrating things about aquarium design is that so few tank lids fit snugly to the housing. This aquarium lid has a nice, flush fit. It is made out of a sturdy plastic and is effortless to lift when feeding time arrives or for aquarium maintenance.

Room for improvement?

To tell you the truth, theres really not much to not like about this tank kit.

To tell you the truth, there’s really not much to not like about this tank kit. The things that you may end up not liking will undoubtedly come down to personal preference. And, most of those things will be with the “extras” in the aquarium kit like the led lighting color selection and the filter not being the type you prefer. When you consider the build of the aquarium itself, all of the extras included to get you setup immediately, and the price point being practically what you’d pay for the tank alone, anyone would be hard-pressed to find better!

While this isn’t considered a “dislike” about the kit itself, you will probably want to purchase an aquarium heater to keep your betta’s aquarium temperature in that 78f-80f golden zone. This kit from Aquarius doesn’t include one probably because this isn’t a “betta specific” aquarium kit. Some species of common freshwater aquarium fish do not require heated water. Betta’s are needy that way! Aquarium heaters are relatively inexpensive and really easy to setup. The heater in the link there would be great for this aquarium!

What we really think

This tank is big, but not too big. The filter included is more than adequate in keeping your aquarium clean, your betta happy and healthy and all while not causing undue stress from a strong current. The LED is nice, clear and bright. The design is elegant and durable while remaining easy to clean and spacious. The price is more than fair for the tank by itself, let alone with the extras that make up this kit. Overall, you’ll have a pretty happy betta if he were to call this his home!

Aquarius 5 set up notes

Here are some simple setup suggestions for this tank if you do decide to house your betta in one.

When you go to attach the filter to the back of the aquarium, run the filter line behind it. And when you go to setup your aquarium heater (you did get one right?) do the same with it. Most fish tank heaters are affixed with suction cups. You can position the heater right below the filter in this case.

Also with the filter setup, you don’t want to completely submerge it. The filter “pod” slips into the slot on the top of the filter assembly. If you were to completely submerge the filter in the water, the aquarium waste collected would fall right back into the tank and therefore make the whole filtration system largely ineffective.

It’s a wise idea to include an aquarium thermometer in your tank setup. This just to ensure that your betta is not too hot or too cold. Some very inexpensive aquarium thermometers attach with a hook and should be placed away from the heating element. They make some pretty hi-tech tank thermometers nowadays that really add something special to your setup!

Once you have your 5 gallon Aquarius tank set up, filled with water and any accessories you choose, you should plug in both the heater and the filter and let things settle while running for a few days. You want the water chemistry to stabilize and some time to tweak the heater for the correct temperature to be achieved.

Also, some people have a hard time finding where the adapter for the LED pugs into. If you look to the top back left corner on the aquarium hood, you should see it. If you see the on and off button, look to the opposite side and you will see it.
